The foundation stone for the new Catholic Chapel in North Berwick was laid on 13 May 1879 by Archbishop Strain, with the opening taking place on 24 September of the same year. For the previous 10 years North Berwick had been served by Father William Grady from his Haddington Mission; it was Father Grady who fought tirelessly to bring about a church in the town - the first Catholic church in North Berwick for 300 years. The opening High Mass was presided over by Archbishop Strain but it was not until September 1882 that North Berwick was made a separate Mission under Father Matthew Brady, and thus the parish of Our Lady Star of the Sea was born.
